The said Eliza Inns sworn saith I am the wife of John Inns the landlord of the Cheques Inn in Houghton Conquest. On Tuesday the 16th May the Defendant came to my house about 2.15 pm with another man. They were strangers to me. The Defendant Whiteman said I want some bread and cheese and beer and Carter will pay for it. I knew Carter as a fishmonger. He said also I am going to Berwicks to fetch some horses for Carter. Upon that statement I supplied him with a quart of beer and 2 penny worth of bread and cheese each. Both the men sat down and consumed the beer and bread and cheese. They afterwards had another pint. I let them have the things because they said that Carter was to pay for it and I knew Carter so well. His men have called in that way before. What they had altogether came to ten pence. It was you that asked for the bread and cheese I believe it may have been the other man but whichever one it was that asked gave the name of Whiteman. The said Samuel Evans sworn saith I live at the Chequers Inn at Houghton. On 16th May I saw the Defendant come into the house soon after two with another man. I did not hear what was said. I went into the house and found them eating some bread and cheese and drinking beer. They asked for more beer and I supplied them with a pint. They said that Elias Carter would pay for it and that they were going to Berwicks to get some horses. They both joined in the tale. They did this before I supplied the beer. They said Mrs Inns had allowed them to have it for that reason and I allowed them to have it. I only drew one pint you were both there when that was called for and both joined in calling for it. The said Elias Carter sworn saith I live at Bedford and am a Fishmonger. I am in the habit of selling Fish in Ampthill market on Thursdays and have done so for the last 27 years. I know the Defendant Whiteman by sight I never authorized him to go to John Inns and obtain bread and cheese and beer or anything else at my expense. I never authorized him or any one to fetch horses from Mr Bewicks on the 16th. I had not bought any horses there. I do buy a good many horses. I have employed the Defendant two or three times but not lately – not for 12 months The foregoing Depositions of Eliza Inns Samuel Evans and Elias Carter were taken and sworn at this County Court Hall in Ampthill in the County of Bedford on this 1st day of June 1893. Statement of Accused: I have nothing to say.
