This extensive manuscript (possibly an oral transcript) is a reflection on both Ampthill's past and on the lives of Ampthill residents Alec and Mildred Mann, as told by Alec and Mildred Mann and written by Ron Holt. OVERVIEW Part I -Alec's Family and Origins The first part of the manuscript takes the reader through the life of Alec Mann, born in 1914 in Ampthill. The script firstly outlines Alec's family background and his early life, which he spent on Oliver street. -Childhood and school days The reader is taken through Alec's schooldays, from his pre-school days at Mrs. Wildman's school to his time at 'proper school' the Sands, including his first job doing a paper round. -Growing Up In this section Alec speaks of his first job, at furniture store 'Peck's'. There is a description of the location and ownership of many of the shops in the town centre at the time, mainly on Oliver Street, Dunstable Street and Church Street. -Working Man -Married Life - And a War This section covers the marriage of Alec and Mildred Mann and Alec's growing enthusiasm for gardening, aswell as his experience of the Second World War. -Return to Peace Alec takes the reader through his life after the war up until 1994. -The Fire Service -Postscript A nostalgic reflection by Alec on his life and on the development of Ampthill. Part II - Mildred Joy Mildred Mann reflects on her life in Ampthill, starting with her family and origins before going on to describe her early years, including her time attending the Sands School and attending Sunday School at Church. Her time working in a Hat Factory in Luton is detailed, followed by her years as a housewife. As in Part I, much attention is paid to Ampthill and it's development as well as to the people who lived in it.
