- Scope and ContentDeposition of William Smith on his Oath saith as follows: I am a manufacturer and carry on business in George Street Luton on 11th July 1889 Prisoner came to my warehouse. I knew him for a few months previously as being employed in the town. He asked me to give him an exchange cheque for the [our] produced (D) which I identify as the wanted cash immediately I drew him a cheque on our bank for £10 on Messers Sharples of Luton. The cheque produced into our bank and received it back unpaid and marked “a/c closed”). I have never seen him until today. I produce the cheque I gave Lucas (marked F*) It was paid on 12th July 1889. *Original Cheque marked F on file. Notes on rear of cheque say: This is the cheque mentioned in the evidence of William Smith as a production as marked with the above letter on the 3rd May 1893.
