- Scope and ContentCharles Smeeton: the accused had been in his employment for 18 months up to 31 May. It was Gilson’s duty to receive money from his customers. On 31 May he copied a bill from the book which referred to Mrs Goode, machinist 5s 10d. He showed the bill to Gilson and asked if it was the bill paid. Gilson said no and Smeeton told him Mrs Goode had said she had paid. He gave Gilson the bill and told him to see to it and it was between them. Gilson said he would go up there. A few minutes later he asked if Mrs Goode had now paid and Gilson said she had. He asked Gilson what other money he had kept and he replied ‘Fletchers’. Mary Goode: she paid Gilson 2s 2d in March or April and paid him another 4d. In February Gilson brought her a sheep’s head and she paid him 1s 3d. She was an occasional customer of Mr Smeeton at that time. Elizabeth Fletcher: on 20 May the accused took her some mutton. She was a meat customer of Mr Smeeton. She believed she had paid Gilson 2 s 8d. Gilson did not give her a receipt. Sergeant William Bedlow: on 1 June he told the accused he was charged with embezzling from Mr Smeeton on the accounts of Mrs Fletcher and Mrs Goode. Gilson said he had the money and rink was the cause of him keeping it.
