Daniel Brown: he was a farmer and assisted his father on his farm at Luton. They had a little homestead in the Lea Road, Luton. On Thursday 3 November the prisoner was working there for his father. There had been 2 shot bags in a shed there. He saw them safe at 1pm on Thursday and missed them the next day. He informed PC Haynes. On Saturday he was shown 2 shot bags and they were the ones he had missed. Roderick Donald Fraser: he was a pawnbroker at 2 Bute Street, Luton. The 2 shot bags were pledged at his shop on 3 November for 1s 1d. The ticket produced corresponded with the duplicate found on the prisoner. PC James Haynes: he took the prisoner into custody on 5 November and told him the charge. The prisoner denied the charge and said he had found the shot bags in a hedge beside the church yard. He produced a pawn ticket which he took from the prisoner. Statement of the accused: the police constable came up to him on Saturday evening and said he wanted him to go to the pawnshop with him. He went and the constable asked Mr Fraser if he knew him. Mr Fraser said he did and the policeman told him he was his prisoner. He told the policeman he did not steal them but found them under some bushes in a hedge.
