Skevington Eyles, constable of Elstow – last Saturday between 6 and 7pm he had in his custody a man named John Hide on a charge of felony and was conveying him to Bedford to take him before a magistrate. On the road to Bedford the prisoner struggled violently to release himself. At this time there were about 30 persons present. He was apprehensive that the prisoner would rescue himself or be rescued. He charged Thomas Bandy to assist him and said to him “I charge you Thomas Bandy to aid and assist me in the King’s duty”. Bandy answered “I’ll have nothing to do with it”. Bandy said he had no business with the prisoner and used very abusive language towards him. He then charged William Bandy to aid and assist, saying “William Bandy I charge you to aid and assist me in the King’s duty”. William Bandy also said he would have nothing to do with it. [Question by William Bandy: “Didn’t you say to me Will Bandy lend me a hand”. Answer: “No I did not”]
