- Scope and ContentThis Indenture witnesseth that Lavinia Fossey aged 15 years on the - day of September last,a poor child belonging to and having settlement in the parish of Husborne Crawley in the County of Bedford daughter of Sarah Fossey, widow of her own free will and by and with the consent of her said mother (testified by her being made a party to and executing these presents) and also with the consent of the Trustees of a certain charity called the Crawley Charity and pursuant to the order and resolution made by them and the Minister, Churchwardens and Overseers of the said parish of Husborne Crawley or the major part iofthem at a meeting held for that purpose in Easter Week last and duly entered in the Minute Book belonging to the said Trustees doth put herself apprentice to Hannah Reddall the wife of Robert Reddall of Woburn in the County of Bedford to lear the art or trade of a milliner and dressmaker which she the said Hannah Reddall useth and with her after the manner of an apprentice in the said art or trade to serve for the term of two years from the 3rd April 1877 during which term the said apprentice her said Mistress faithfully shall serve in the said art or trade of a milliner and dressmaker and in all lawful concerns belonging thereto and as a faithful apprentice dhe shall behave herself towards her said Mistress and all hers during the said term honestly orderly and obediently in all things and to the best of her skill and ability. And the said Robert Reddall and Hannah Reddall (the said Robert Reddall covenanting for himself and also for and on behalf of his said wife) in consideration of such faithful service of the said apprentice to be done and performed as aforesaid for her the said hannah Reddall and of the sum of ten pounds sterling money part of a certain Charity moneys payable out of certain lands in the said parish of Husborne Crawley vested in them the said Trustees for this and other purposes to be paid to them the said Robert Reddall and Hannah Reddall by the Trustees in the manner following: The sum of five pounds a moiety thereof upon the execution of these presents and the remaining sum of five pounds the other moiety on the third day of April 1878 if the said apprentice shall then be living and in the service of the said Hannah Reddall (the receipt of which said first mentioned sum of five pounds is hereby acknowledged) do hereby accept and take the said lavinia Fossey as the apprentice of the said Hannah Reddall during the said term and her the said Lavinia Fossey in the said art or trade of a milliner and dressmaker which she the said Hannah Reddall useth by the best means that she can shall teach and instruct or cause to be taught and instructed and shall pay unto the said apprentice in lieu and satisfaction of her board and lodging clothes washing and all other necessaries whatsoever the wages or sums of money following: One shilling and sixpence per week during the first year and two shillings per week during the second year of the said term. And the said Sarah Fossey hereby agrees that her said daughter shall receive such wages weekly in lieu of her board and lodging and clothes washing and all other necessaries which she the said Sarah Fossey covenants to find and provide for her said daughter and also physic, surgery and nursing in case of sickness. Provided always that if the said apprentice shall be absent from her said Mistres's service during any part of the said term on account of illness or from any other cause without the consent of her said mistress for that purpose first obtained it is hereby agreed between all the parties hereto that such of the same respective weekly payments as would in pursuance of the civenants in that behalf accrue or become due during such time as the said apprentice shall be so absent shall not be payable or a due proportion thereof for the time of such absence shall be deducted therefrom and the increase of weekly payments in the second year shall not commence until the time the said apprentice may have been absent shall have been made up. And in case ofher absence she shall continue to serve the said Hannah Reddall as such apprentice for such further time beyond the said term of two years as shall make up the full period of her said apprenticeship. And lastly for the true performance of the several agreements hereinbefore contained wither of the said parties hereto bindeth herself and himself unto the other by these presents. In witness whereof the said parties have hereunto set their hands and seals the twentieth day of April 1877.
