Depositions of James Adams Ebsworth, grocer of Biggleswade. Thomas Harridge Inskip, farmer of Sutton. In the case of Samuel Lyon accused of obtaining a pair of trousers, a pair of braces and a pound weight of biscuits. Evidence A – receipt for 11s 6d on the headed paper of J. Ebsworth – Tea Dealer, Grocer & Provision Merchant. Evidence B – letter from J Ebsworth to Mr Inskip regarding the supply of goods.

James Adams Ebsworth: he was grocer, draper and general dealer. On Thursday 2 June, Samuel Lyons came into his shop and said he wanted a pair of trousers, a pair of braces and a pound of biscuits and that he was to put them down to Mr Inskip. He was supplied with the goods he asked for and went away with them. On 10 June he received a note from Mr Inskip stating he had not given Lyon authority to fetch goods for him. He had believed Lyon to be in the employment of Mr Inskip and gave him the goods on that basis. He charged Lyon with obtaining the goods from him by false pretences. They were worth about 11 shillings and 10 pence. Thomas Harridge Inskip: he occupied a farm at Sutton and the prisoner used to live on the farm but had left at the end of last year. He dealt with Mr Ebsworth and did not authorise the prisoner to obtain any goods for him from Mr Ebsworth’s shop. Statement of the accused: he was guilty and had nothing more to say.
