- Scope and ContentHannah Cole: wife of Philip Cole, innkeeper of Ampthill. On the 16th May the prisoner came into the inn with a man called Whiteman at about 3.30pm. Whiteman said that they had come to fetch 2 horses for Mr. Carter and that they required bread, cheese and ale which Mr. Carter would pay for on Thursday. She knew Mr. Carter well and upon that statement she supplied them with bread, cheese and ale. She knew Mr. Carter as a fishmonger who often bought horses and visited the inn every Thursday. Elias Carter: fishmonger of Bedford. He sells fish at Ampthill market on Thursdays. He knew the prisoner and the man called Whiteman as he employed them occasionally to fetch fish from the station. Both men were not in his employment on the 16th May and he had not authorized them to go to Philip Coles to get bread and cheese nor to fetch any horses. George Walker: I had no idea of doing such a thing. I will not do it again
