    Apprenticeship Indenture: Thomas Day, son of James Day of Eversholt, bricklayer, apprentice to Robert Feake Nixon of Woburn, carpenter & builder. From 11 October instant for the term of six years or until Thomas Day shall arrive at the age of twenty one years. Robert Feake Nixon in consideration of the sum of Thirty Five pounds to be paid to him by the said James Day at or before the sealing of these presents (the receipt of which is hereby acknowledged) and also in consideration of the service of the said Thomas Day to be done and performed by him doth hereby accept and take the said Thomas Day as his apprentice in the trade or business of carpenter and builder which he now uses and carries on….and doth covenant and agree to find and provide for the said Thomas Day all and whatsoever tools and implements shall be necessary or requisite to be used by the said Thomas Day…and also to allow and pay to the said Thomas Day in lieu of board and lodging clothes washing and other necessaries of him the said Thomas Day (except only the lodging of him the said Thomas Day during such time as he shall be employed by the said Robert Feake Nixon at any place which shall be distant from Woburn aforesaid four miles or upwards which in that case to be found and provided by the said Robert Feake Nixon) the wages or salary following… the sum of six shillings lawful money of Great Britain weekly and every week during the first and second years of the said term and the sum of eight shillings of the lawful money weekly and every week for and during the third and fourth years of the said term, the sum of ten shillings of the lawful money weekly and every week for and during the remainder of the said term. Provided that if it shall happen that the said Thomas Day shall at any time or times during the said term from illness or on any account whatsoever be absent from the business and employment of the said Robert Feake Nixon without the consent of him the said Robert Feake Nixon for that purpose had and obtained then the said respective weekly payments shall cease. James Day doth hereby agree with Robert Feake Nixon his executors and administrators that he the said Thomas Day shall and will during all the said term well and truly serve the said Robert Feake Nixon as an apprentice in the trade or business of carpenter and builder diligently attending to the business or concerns of his Master doing no damage or injury to his said Master nor knowingly suffering the same to be done without acquainting his said Master thereof ; he shall not waste the goods of his said Master nor lend them unlawfully; he shall not commit fornication nor contract matrimony within the said term or time; he shall not play cards or dice or tables or any other unlawful games whereby his said Master may have any loss with his own goods or others; without the licence of his said Master he shall neither buy nor sell; he shall not haunt taverns or play houses nor absent himself from the service of his said Master unlawfully but shall and will in all respects acquit and demean himself as an honest and faithful apprentice ought to do and shall and will take and accept the sums of six, eight and ten shillings weekly in lieu and full satisfaction for board & lodging washing clothes and all other necessaries during the said term. James Day shall and will find and provide for Thomas Day his son sufficient wearing apparel of all sorts both linen and woollen and also meat drink and lodging (except as aforesaid) washing and all other necessaries during all the said term. Robert Feake Nixon according to the best of his power skill and knowledge shall and will during all the said term teach and instruct or cause to be taught & instructed the said Thomas Day in the business of a carpenter & builder. Additional note on dorse: Thos Day has been absent many times without leave or licence in 1827, 1828, 1829 and part 1830 – to June 26th and I have not demanded restitution – from the 28th Day of June I do require justice done to me. June 28 to July 10 – absent 9 days; July 12 to the 23 absent – 1 day – 25 to August. Calculation on dorse of wages subtracted.
