Mary Piggott, wife of Frederick Piggott of Caddington – Hannah Bachelor is her servant. One day last week she missed a handkerchief from her drawers. She thought perhaps Bachelor had it as she has missed things before. She searched Bachelor’s box on Thursday and found nothing there. She then searched her bed and found the handkerchief under the bolster. Bachelor was not there when she found the handkerchief and she did not tell anything about it until Saturday. She looked again on Saturday and the handkerchief was still there with a bit of a ribbon and a sovereign wrapped up in it. The handkerchief is marked M F which were her initials before she was married. Frederick Piggott – a week ago last Friday he missed a sovereign from his box upstairs. He keeps the box locked. The lock had not been broken open and he does not remember leaving the box open. Only himself, his wife and the servant live in the house. Last Saturday his wife told him what she had found under the bolster. He threatened to send the girl away and told her to go upstairs and pack up her things. He and his wife followed her. The things were not then under the bolster and he charged her with having them. He insisted on her delivering them up to him. She then took the handkerchief, the ribbon and the sovereign out of her pocked. She said she had found the sovereign in going to Mrs Roe’s and that she had told Mrs Roe of it. Sarah Roe, widow – last Friday night Hannah Bachelor came to her for some lard. Bachelor did not tell her she had found a sovereign.
