- Scope and ContentWilliam Rudd Green: he left home about 9.30am on 25 October and returned about 4.30pm. He found a broken pane of glass in the sitting room window. He missed a gold chain, a locket, some studs, a pencil case, some brooches and an eardrop. He missed them from a box upstairs. He also missed some money. Eliza Green: she found he husband’s box had been broken open and some money had been missed. She missed a shilling, a sixpence and some half pennies. She had taken her watch from the box before she had left the house. She had left the other articles in the box and they were missing on her return. William Summerfield: on 25 October he saw the prisoner near Mr Green’s house about 3pm. He did not see the prisoner come out of the house but saw him in the yard. A man was with him. They came out onto the road. They set after them and the prisoner and the other man ran across the fields. He caught the prisoner in a wood about a mile from Mr Green’s house. Thomas Warden: about 3pm he saw 2 men in Mr Green’s garden. One of the men was the prisoner. The men ran across the fields and both threw something down. He went up to the wood and the prisoner lay in the wood. He told the prisoner he must go with him and the prisoner agreed. As they passé the place where the prisoner had thrown something down, the prisoner said he knew nothing about it. He delivered the prisoner to the constable’s house and went back to the place where something had been thrown. He picked up 2 keys, some money and a stud. Levy Issard delivered to him the chain and locket. Thomas Loft: about 3pm he saw 2 men leave Mr Green’s house at Cotton End. The prisoner was one of them. The men left the road and went over some fields. He, Thomas Warden and William Summerfield went after them. They caught them in the wood and afterwards went out and picked up keys, a knife, earrings, brooches and a half penny. He picked these up in one of the field the prisoner had gone through. Joseph Potter: he saw the prisoner and another man near Mr Green’s house at Cotton End. He followed the prisoner to the wood. He picked up some keys in the field that the prisoner had run across. He did not see the prisoner leave Mr Green’s house. George Simms: he saw the prisoner leave Mr Green’s premises with another man. That morning he picked up some matches and a taper in a track in the field that the prisoner and the other man went over. George Summerfield: the prisoner was delivered into his custody. William Rudd Green: the locket, chain, earrings, pencil case, studs and 3 brooches produced were his property. These were the articles he missed.
