  • Scope and Content
William Thackray of Toddington, carrier – on 24 October a piece of calf’s skin leather (value 8d) was taken out of his shop. The same day he saw a piece of leather in the coat pocket of William Philpot who was employed in his service. The coat was hanging up in the shop. Supposing the leather was his property he let it remain in Philpot’s pocket until he left his premises in the evening. He then followed Philpot and insisted on his surrendering the stolen property. William Jones – he went behind the door in his master Mr Thackray’s shop to grease his knife, as that is where the tallow is kept for this purpose. William Philpot’s coat was hanging up behind the door, and in the pocket he saw a piece of calves skin leather. He suspected it was stolen and told his master. When Philpot left at night his master followed and shortly after brought back the piece of leather. The leather now produced is the same – he knows it by the mark which he made himself. William Philpot – he was going to make himself a pair of braces from the leather. He was not going to sell it.
