Ann Jeffs: housekeeper to Abraham Dear, landlord of the Red Lion at Haynes. On Monday 29th April the prisoner came in to the Red Lion and asked her for a quart of beer for John Wilson and that he would pay for it on Saturday. She had supplied beer to Mr. Wilson in this way before. She supplied the prisoner with the quart of beer and the prisoner left the inn. The prisoner returned about 45 minutes later and asked for a gallon of beer. She asked if it was Mr. Wilson and the prisoner said it was and that Mr. Wilson would pay for it on Saturday. She said she was doubtful if the beer was for Mr. Wilson. The prisoner said that it positively was for Mr. Wilson. She supplied him with the gallon of beer and the prisoner left the inn. At about 6pm Mr. Wilson came into the inn and asked for the beer in the same way. She told him what had happened and then informed the police. He did not know the prisoner but assumed he worked with Mr. Wilson from what he said. John Wilson: a labour of Haynes. He knew the prisoner, Alfred Godfrey. On the 29th April he met him in the wood of Haynes leaving the Red Lion about 11.30. The prisoner had a bottle of beer with him. He did not authorise the prisoner to procure beer for him at the Red Lion that day. He worked together with the prisoner then but has not worked with the prisoner since. After passing the prisoner he went to the Red Lion and saw Mrs. Jeffs. Alfred Godfrey: I had got beer with Jon Wilson before in that way.
