- Scope and ContentJohn Facey: a game watcher living at Ridgmont. On 23 September he was coming through a field in Ridgmont and saw the prisoner. He went to the gate in the field and as the prisoner was coming through the gate, he asked him what he had in his pockets. The prisoner gave no answer but a hens head poked out of his pocket. He asked the prisoner whose hen it was and the prisoner said it was his own and he was going to sell it. When he had first seen the prisoner he was coming from the direction of Abraham Wing Crouch’s at Ridgmont. He suspected it was one of Crouch’s fowls. He told the prisoner he must go back to Crouch’s with him. Edward Whittamore: he was in the employment of Mr Crouch at Ridgmont. He saw the last witness come to his masters with a hen. He identified it as one of his masters. He could swear to it. PC Samuel Musgrove: he received the fowl on 24 September from Abraham Wing Crouch. He was directed by him to apprehend the prisoner for stealing it. Statement of the accused: “he said he saw me along the road at 11 o’clock. I told him it was not me. I never come out of the house before two and three”.
