- Scope and ContentRoger Riddle of Luton, watchman - he was sent for to William Ellis’ house, a beer shop in Park Street Luton, last Saturday about 5pm. He met Whitby coming out of the beer shop with a pair of shoes under his frock. He was directed to apprehend him by Mrs Ellis. He dropped the shoes now produced. Phoebe Ellis, wife of William Ellis - she saw a man with a pair of shoes which belonged to her husband. She had given 4s 6d and a quart of beer for them about a week ago. She had set the shoes on the stairs in the house. She saw Whitby with something under his frock. She challenged him and told him to drop them and be off about his business. Whitby did drop them and Roger Riddle then took him into custody.
