- Scope and ContentSusan wife of John King of Girtford - -n 8 November 1836 she left her house shut up and locked up safe about 2pm and took her dough to the bakers. When she came back she found the street door locked but the back door unlocked, a pane of one of the windows broken and the window open. She went upstairs and found the room very dirty, and had not left it that way so was suspicious. She found things in disorder. In the next room her keys, which she had left in the drawer in a box, and some of the clothes were hanging out. Her money was in a smaller box in the box which had been taken away. There were 4 sovereigns, 3 half sovereigns and 3 shillings in the box, and one shilling laying on the table. All were gone. Her husband’s razor and case were also taken. George Tilcock of Beeston – she was near John King’s house on 8 November at about 2.30pm and saw Thomas Jeeves try to open the back door of John King’s house. Jeeves then tried the window but it did not open and he broke a pane of glass. He did not see Jeeves get in, but shortly after he saw him in the house and saw him open the back door. He watched but did not see Jeeves come out. Jeeves father’s ground adjoins the house and the house also belongs to him. John King of Girtford in the parish of Sandy – on 8 November his house was broken open and money stolen. He suspected Thomas Jeeves and took out a warrant against him, but Jeeves got away and absconded form the neighbourhood. He has not seen or heard of him until this morning, when he found him at Everton.
