    This Indenture witnesseth that William Francis (son of Milley Francis otherwise Amelia Francis of Ridgmont in the County of Bedford, widow by Vincent Francis her late husband deceased) a poor child belonging to and having a settlement in the Parish of Ridgmont aforesaid by and with the consent of his said mother (testified by her being a Party to and Executing these presents) doth put himself apprentice to Thomas Mallery of Ridgmont, cordwainer to learn his and with him after the manner of an apprentice to serve him from the day of the date hereof unto the full end and term of seven years or until he the said apprentice shall attain the age of twenty one years from hence next ensuing ad fully to be complete and ended during which term the said apprentice his said Master faithfully shall serve his secrets keep his lawful commands everywhere gladly he shall do no damage to his said Master nor see it to be done of others but to his power shall forthwith give warning to his said Master of the same he shall not waste the goods of his said Master nor lend them unlawfully to any he shall not commit fornication nor contract matrimony during the said Term. He shall not play cards dice or any other unlawful games whereby his said Master may have any loss by his own Goods or others during the said Term without license of his said Master he shall neither buy or sell he shall not haunt Taverns or Playhouses or absent himself from his said Master’s Service day or night unlawfully but in all things as a faithful apprentice he shall behave himself towards his said Master and all his during the said Term. And the said Thomas Mallery in consideration of the sum of eleven pounds of lawful money of Great Britain to him in hand paid by the Churchwardens of the said Parish of Ridgmont at or before the execution of these presents the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged (which said sum of eleven pounds is part and parcel of certain charity monies or interest arising therefrom left by the will of Arthur Whitchelsea for the putting out annually poor children of the parish of Ridgmont and other villages therein mentioned apprentices) the said Thomas Mallery his said apprentice in the art or calling of a cordwainer which he useth by the best means that he can shall and will teach and instruct or cause to be taught or instructed finding unto the said apprentice good and sufficient meat drink washing lodging and all other necessaries during the said term. And for the performance of all the covenants and agreements aforesaid either of the said parties Master and Apprentice bindeth himself unto the other by these presents. In Witness whereof the said parties to these presents have hereunto set their hand and seals the Thirty First day of December in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and thirty.
