- Scope and ContentThis Indenture witnesseth that George Tansley (son of John Tansley of Salford in the County of Bedford, labourer and Helen his wife) a poor child born and having a settlement in the parish of Salford aforesaid by and with consent of his said father and of the Reverend Edward Orlebar Smith, Vicar of the Parish of Salford aforesaid, James Morris, Churchwarden and Henry Summerford (carpenter) and Henry Sturgess, Overseers of the poor of the said parish (testified by them severally being party to and sealing and delivering these presents) doth put himself apprentice to Henry Summerford of Salford aforesaid, cordwainer, to learn his art and calling and with him after the manner of an Apprentice to serve from the Twenty Second day of January now last past unto the full end and term of Seven Years from thence next ensuing and fully to be complete and ended or until he the said Apprentice shall attain the Age of Twenty One Years during which said term the said apprentice his said Master faithfully shall serve in all lawful businesses according to his power wit and ability and honestly orderly and obediently in all things demean and behave himself towards his said Master and all his during the said term. And the said Henry Summerford (cordwainer) in consideration of the Sum of Sixteen Pounds of lawful money of Great Britain to him in hand paid by the said Vicar Churchwarden and Overseers of the Poor of the said Parish of Salford in manner following (that is to say) the sum of Eight Pounds being one moiety thereof on or before the execution of these presents and the Sum of Eight Pounds being the other moiety thereof on the Twenty Second day of January which will be in the Year of Our Lord One thousand eight hundred and Forty Eight the receipt of which said first mentioned moiety is hereby acknowledged (which said sum of Sixteen Pounds is part and parcel of certain Charity Monies charged on lands in the Parish of Brightwell by the will of Dr Woodward and payable to the Vicar, Churchwardens and Overseers of the Parish of Salford aforesaid for the binding out of poor children born in the Parish of Salford apprentices) the said Henry Summerford his said apprentice in the art or calling of a cordwainer which he useth by the best means that he can shall and will teach and instruct or cause to be taught and instructed finding unto the said Apprentice good and sufficient meat, drink clothing, lodging, washing and all other necessaries. And at the Expiration of the said Term shall and will provide for his said Apprentice in addition to the clothing he may then have certain new articles of clothing which he may choose to the value of Three Pounds at the least. And it is hereby agreed by and between all the said parties that if the said Apprentice shall not be living or shall not be in the service of the said James Bird or his permitted assigns at the time of the second Moiety of the said premium is made payable as hereinbefore mentioned then that such Moiety shall not be paid and the said Henry Summerford (cordwainer) shall not have any claim in respect thereof. And for the true performance of all the Covenants and Agreements aforesaid the said George Tansley and Henry Summerford (cordwainer) bindeth himself unto the other by these presents. In Witness whereof the said parties to these presents have hereunto set their hands and seals the Thirty First Day of January in the Year of Our Lord one thousand eight hundred and Forty Five.
