  • Scope and Content
Thomas Lines of Newton Bromswold (Northants), servant with Thomas Browning of the same place, farmer – about July 1837 he was at plough in a field of Mr Ekins Simpson in Riseley, with whom he then lived as a servant. When he went to work that morning he was wearing a red waistcoat with yellow spots and four holed bone buttons. He took the waistcoat off when he began to plough and laid it down at the lands end of the field. At 1pm his waistcoat was gone. He made enquiries but could learn nothing of it until yesterday (30 March) when Robert Brown told him that William Stanton had sold a waistcoat to Richard Barrington of Pertenhall. He went that evening to Barrington’s and saw his waistcoat. The four holed bone buttons had been removed except two at the sleeves. The waistcoat was made by James Howell of Catworth, tailor. Richard Barrington of Pertenhall – last hay time he bought a waistcoat from William Stanton for 4s. He recollects it was in the week before Bedford Town Election. He was working with Stanton who was wearing the waistcoat. When he bought the waistcoat it had 4 hold bone buttons. His wife took them off and put other buttons on – this was done to make it look better for Sundays. William Stanton – he bought the waistcoat from a man in the road for 6s 6d. Thomas Asher, constable, has possession of the waistcoat.
