About 8pm he went with Henry Tingay to a part of the road along which the coals were brought. Tingay showed him some coals hidden in the ground and covered over with earth and grass. About 10.30pm Darnell came and put the coals into a bag and too them to a beer shop. Darnell dropped them at the door. He went up and asked Darnell what he had got in the sack. Darnell said “nothing”. He had Tingay take the coals back to his house. There were about ½ cwt. Henry Tingay of Northill, labourer – the road by which Mr Cant brings coals from the river to his house runs near his father’s garden. He was working in the garden and saw the carts going along. As each cart went by Darnell went behind the cart, took out a large lump of coal and laid it by the side of the gate until the driver of the cart was out of sight. Darnell then put it into a large hole which he had dug. Darnell covered the hole with a sack and then sprinkled some earth and grass over it. William Darnell – when asked what he had to say made no reply.
