  • Scope and Content
George Brown of Woburn – he is a butcher and also sells milk by retail. Painter is his hired weekly servant and has been employed by him for over one year. Painter carries milk round to his customers and should pay in twice a day all sums which are paid daily. Some pay only weekly and others go on longer. His wife manages that part of his business. Elizabeth Brown, wife of George Brown – they supply Mr Davey of Woburn with milk. The last time she received money from Mr Davey it was through Painter, last December. She produces an account for milk supplied to Mr Davey since that time. She makes the account from information give to her by Painter of milk supplied. She measures out the milk to painter, measures what he brings back, and takes his account on a slate of what he has sold, what has been paid for and what has been left unpaid. She transfers the account to this sort of memorandum on paper. No money has been accounted for from Mr Davey since last December. They also supply Mr Henrie of Woburn with milk. Painter has not accounted to her for any money from Mr Henrie for over 5 weeks, nor has he accounted for any money received from George Archer. Painter said about one month ago that the sum due from Archer was 1s 5d. She makes that out by Painter’s telling her from day to day that Archer had not paid. Jane Wilde, singlewoman – she is servant to George Davey. Painter brings milk to the house and has done so for over a year. She has always paid him – sometimes at the end of a month, sometimes it went on more. On 29 May she paid him 7s 6d for milk, and 6s 8d on 31 July. The writing on the top of the paper she produces is Mrs Davey’s, saying “Received 6s 8d John Painter”. She had paid Painter for all milk delivered since Christmas as well as before. There is nothing now due for milk except from last Monday week. Mary Ann Henrie – she is the wife of Edward Henrie of Woburn, schoolmaster. They have milk from Mr Brown and Painter has delivered it for a year. She paid every Saturday evening regularly, except once or twice on Monday morning. She last paid Painter on Saturday 5 August. She paid him 7½d. Mary Ann Hansell – she is servant to Mr Henrie. On 28 July she gave Painter 7d for milk. George Archer – he is a bookkeeper living in Woburn. He has milk from Mr Brown delivered by Painter. He has often paid for it himself. He never went more than 2 days unpaid. Last time he saw any paid himself was last Monday when he saw one penny paid. Within the last week he has heard Painter say their payments were all straight. John Painter – “I have nothing at all to say”.
