- Scope and ContentJoseph Bailey of Clifton, plait dealer - this morning (Oct 6) he attended Shefford Market and bought the plait now produced from Mary Rogers. He went with her into the Crown public house to pay for it. He laid the plait down by his side. While he was sitting with other people Sarah Stimpson came and took the plait up and said “pay me for the three score you bought of me”. He said he had never bought any from her and that if he had she should give him the ticket and he would pay her. She then laid it down but stayed near him for a few minutes. She then went towards Mr Gurney. He then discovered the plait had been taken. Mr Gurney was in the same room. As soon as Stimpson left Mr Gurney he went to him and saw Gurney had his plait. He asked Gurney where he got it from. Gurney told him and gave it to him. From what Gurney said he gave Stimpson into the custody of PC Hann. He also gave PC Hann the plait. William Gurney of Holwell, plait dealer - Stimpson brought the plait to him this morning at the Crown Inn and offered it to him for sale. He bought it. Soon afterwards Joseph Bailey came and said it was his plait. He went after the woman, told her the plait belonged to Bailey and asked for his money back. She returned it immediately. She said she had sold it to Bailey and that he refused to pay her for it because she had lost the ticket. Mary Rogers of Meppershall, spinster - she sold the plait produced that morning to Joseph Bailey at Shefford Market. It was plaited by her brothers and she took it to market by their orders. William Hann of Shefford, police constable - Stimpson was given into his custody on the charge of stealing plait. He produces the plait. Sarah Stimpson - all she has to say is that the plait belongs to her sister who told her to take it Shefford Market for sale. She sold 3 1/2 score to Bailey who refused to pay her for it because she had got the wrong ticket. It is the same plait that she sold to Bailey in the market.
