- Scope and ContentJoseph Rush: the prisoner was his apprentice and his time expired on 15 March. Joseph Spacey of Milton Bryan was in his debt as a customer. The prisoner was authorized to go to Joseph Spacey’s and collect money for him. It was the prisoner’s duty to account to him for any money he received on the evening of the day it was received. He had at times, when paid the money by the prisoner, put it down on a bit of paper and not in a book. He always entered such sums in a book afterwards, except on one occasion. Catherine Spacey: wife of Joseph Spacey, a labourer of Milton Bryan. In August her husband had goods from Mr Rush to the value of £1 8s 4d. Since then she had paid him several sums. On 3 March the prisoner came and asked if she had any money for his master and she asked him if his master was coming. The prisoner replied no and she gave the prisoner half a sovereign and which he said he would take to his master. She told him there was 4 shillings more to take off which she had paid before. She was able to produce a bill. Statement of the accused: he [Rush] ought produce a bit of paper the money was put on the night he received it. Rush put it on a bit of paper and had done so several times.
