Isaac Orris Barker - he lives at Beeston in the parish of Sandy. On Tuesday 14 march about 9pm he was going from Beeston towards Brook End when he noticed a noise on the other side of the hedge. He looked over the gate into a field occupied by Joseph Bird and saw a man stooping down, who on seeing him jumped up and shot something out of a sack and ran away. He pursued him and caught him. He recognised the man to be Samuel Richardson, who said “I have got no potatoes”. He said “but you meant to have some”. Richardson then crossed the river and escaped. He went and told Bird what happened. The next morning he went to the pit and saw a quantity of potatoes scattered on the ground and that the pit had been disturbed. Joseph Bird of Sandy – Mr Barker came and told him he had caught Richardson stealing his potatoes. The next morning he went to the pit and found a hole in the pit big enough for a man to get his hand in and by the side of the pit he saw about ½ bushel of potatoes and a trowel. He set a boy to watch the pit and sent for the policeman. Samuel Richardson – he was on one side of the hedge and saw a woman on the other side in the lane. A man was with her.
