Depositions - Richard Pryor charged wtih obtaining 6d from Sophia Moore by false pretences

Sophia Moore of Luton – on 17 Dedember Pryor came to her husband John Moore’s shop n Luton and offered some black lead for sale. She bought 1 lb for 6d. She particularly asked him if it was good and he warranted it was. She washed the lead in the presence of Pryor and PC John Millard and found 11 ¼ oz of sand in it. She asked the policeman to come because about a year ago she bought some lead from Pryor which contained sand. John Millard of Luton, police constable – on 17 December he went to John Moore’s house at Luton, into a back room from which he could see into the shop. Pryor came into the shop and sold Mrs Moore a pound of black lead. He could hear what was said. Pryor warranted it was good. He examined the lead and found a quantity of sand in it weighing 11 ¼ oz. Pryor said it was the last pound of black lead he had. Pryor said it was of his own make and there was nothing but black lead there. After he examined Pryor said he did not make it himself and that the lead might have been put in to trick him.
