- Scope and ContentWilliam Adams: on 16 February he sold the prisoner a fat sow. On that day he had the fowl on his premises. He missed the fowl on 17 February and saw it again a week ago. He saw the fowl come out of the prisoner’s barn. The prisoner was not at home. The prisoner’s home was a quarter of a mile from his house. He lived in Old Bedford Road. The prisoner was a grocer. He took possession of the fowl and gave it to Police Sergeant Smith. Superintendent Samuel Pope: on 17 March he apprehended the prisoner on a warrant at Chesterfield. He charged him with stealing a fowl. The prisoner said he had not stolen it and there was a fowl on his premises but he did not know where it came from. PC George Smith: he went to the prisoner’s premises with Mr Adams. He found the fowl and took possession of it. Statement of the accused: nothing.
