Eliza Puddephatt, wife of John Puddephatt of Luton, victualler – her husband keeps the Shoulder of Mutton public house. On Friday 29 Oct Swan came to their house between 2 and 3pm. Swan had ½ pint of beer for which he gave a shilling. She put the shilling in her pocket, then later gave it to her husband who bit a piece out of it. She knows the shilling produced by Mr Bayldon is the one Swan gave her. That evening Swan came again, had another ½ pint and gave her another shilling. PC Millard came up just afterwards and she gave him the last shilling. He said it was a bad one. She believes the shilling produced to be the same one. She did not give the first shilling to her husband until after Swan had given her the second shilling. After Millard told her it was bad she remembered Swan’s face and realized he had given her the first shilling. John Puddephatt of Luton, victualler – he keeps the Shoulder of Mutton. On Friday 29th his wife gave him a shilling about 8pm. He looked at it and bit it. He told her it was bad. He kept it until Saturday morning when he gave it to Mr Bayldon. He marked the shilling, which is the one now produced. John Millard of Luton, police constable – on Friday 29 Oct he saw Swan in George Street about 5pm. He followed him up the street and he went into the Shoulder of Mutton. He saw Swan receive ½ pint of beer from Mrs Puddephatt. Swan drank the beer and went out. He asked Mrs Puddephatt what she had received from Swan. She showed him a shilling. He took it and told her it was a bad one.
