    Joseph Roberts: Superintendent of the Bedfordshire Reformatory. The prisoners were inmates of the reformatory on 22 November 1858. Hodgson was admitted on the 26 April and absconded on 28 June. He was retaken and remained in the reformatory from 28 June to 22 November. He missed him from the reformatory at 5am on 22 November. He had seen him at 10.30pm the previous night. The shirts worn by both prisoners belonged to the managers of the reformatory. The scarf worn by Woodman was his property and the coat and trousers worn by Hodgson belonged to an inmate named Edward Grater. The waistcoat and trousers worn by Woodman belonged to an inmate named Eli Walker. The inmates of the reformatory wore clothing provided by the managers. The clothing belonging to the inmates was in his custody. The boys were not allowed to leave the reformatory without permission. Permission had not been given to either of the accused. Robert Evan Roberts: Governor of Bedford Prison. He went to Dudley in Worcestershire on 21 December. Woodman was delivered into his custody there. He had on the clothing he now stood in. James Hodgins: he received the accused Hodgson at the police station in Sheffield on 24 December. He had on the clothing he wore now.
