William Goodyear: the prisoner was in his employment on and previous to 11 October 1858. In consequence of his suspicions he examined his stock and found he had lost a quantity of bonnets, mixed tapes and materials. Alfred Sandon: on the Thursday before the circus came to Luton, he was the prisoner at the top of Spencer’s yard and was asked to sell bonnets for him. Luck said his sister had sent them from Redbourn. He agreed and asked when he could have them and they agreed the next morning. He went to the bottom of the yard the next morning and Luck came with some bonnets wrapped in paper. He told him to get a shilling each for them. He gave them to William Golds. William Gold’s sister gave him the money for them on 15 December and he took the money to Luck. Luck gave him and Golds a shilling. There were 20 bonnets. The following week the prisoner gave him 16 more to sell and took them to Golds house. The following Monday he went with Charles Luck to Golds house and Luck fetched them away. Harriet Golds: Alfred Sandon lived in the same yard. Sandon gave her 20 bonnets to sell. She sold them for 9d each. Another time she had 11 more to sell. He sold them for 7d each and gave her brother the money. William Golds: Charles Luck came to him that day and gave him some bonnets to sell. There were 11 bonnets and he gave them to his sister to sell. She sold them for 7d each and he gave the money to Luck. Luck gave him 9d for his trouble. Superintendnet Samuel Pope: he charged the prisoner with stealing 20 bonnets from Mr Goodyear and giving them to Alfred Sandon to sell. The prisoner said he did take them and give them to Sandon. He also charged him with taking 11 bonnets and giving them to Golds to sell. The prisoner said he had done so. Statement of the accused: nothing to say.
