- Scope and ContentNumber of prisoners in custody 28th June 1873 = 60 On the corresponding day last year there were 112. The number of committals during the quarter have been males 60, females 8, total 68 being a decrease of 12 as compared with last year and of 48 as compared with the quarter ending midsummer 1871. Of the 68 persons committed 37 were residents and 31 non residents of the County. 24 could read and write imperfectly, 16 could read only and 28 could neither read or write. 6 had been in this prison once before, 2 twice, 4 thrice and 10 four times upwards. Edward Gardham, one of the Military prisoners, under sentence of six months has had three months of his original term of imprisonment remitted by order of the Military authorities. On 5th June last Patrick Flynn under sentence of penal servitude was removed to the convict prison Pentonville. On 16th April Thomas Tollett was removed to the Sandbach Reformatory, Cheshire. John Crisp has been whipped 98 strokes) with birch rod by order of the Committing Magistrate. [Charles] Cherry, the night watchman, has resigned throug hill health; during his service in the prison he discharged his duties in a satisfactory manner. Up to the present time his duties have been discharged by the warders. During the past quarter I have paid over £150 as profits on the labour of the prison, making £300 already paid into the County funds for this year.
