- Scope and ContentNumber of prisoners in custody 5 April 1873 = 51 On the corresponding day last year there were 119. The number of committals during the quarter have been males 89, females 7, total 96 being a decrease of 28 as compared with last year and of 26 as compared with the quarter ending Easter 1871. Of the 96 persons committed 60 were residents and 36 non residents of the County. 3 could read and write well, 35 imperfectly, 16 could read only and 42 could neither read or write. 13 had been in this prison once before, 2 twice, 4 thrice and 11 four times upwards. On the 28th March Thomas Fell and Frederick Hook were removed to Pentonville Convict Depot by order of the Secretary of State. Alfred Richards has been removed to the Weston Reformatory, Warwickshire, George Henry Brockett and Frederick Albone to the Bradwell Reformatory, Cheshire, and George Moore to the Beds Reformatory. I received the Queen's Commands to remit three months of the sentence (six months) passed on Jacob Ward committed from the Borough of Bedford for an assault on the Police. I accordingly discharged him on the 1st Feb 1873. During the Quarter I have paid £150 to the County Treasurer as profits on prisoners earnings. Satisfactory arrangements have been made since the last Sessions for the reception ofmilitary prisoners into your prison. The number expected to be sent in the course of 12 months is estimated at about 40. On the 5th a conference of Visiting Justices on prison discipline and labour in County and Borough prisons was held at Lord Dudley's on Park Lane, London. I received an invitation requesting my presence from Sir Walter Crofton. There was a large gathering of Justices (nearly 100) from different counties of England. The inspector of Prisons H Briscoe inspected the prison on the 27th. He saw every one of the prisoners separately in their cells, none of whom made any complaints. The subordinate officers have expressed their gratitude and wished me to convey their thanks to the court for the increase made on their salaries.
