  • Scope and Content
Elizabeth Hallworth of Ampthill, singlewoman – she lives with her brother Charles Hallworth, a butcher at Ampthill. On 8 May Timms came to the shop asked for a small loin of mutton and a pound of kidney beef suet for Mr Hawkins of Marston. They occasionally serve Mr Hawkins with meat, but she did not know Timms. Timms said he was going somewhere else in the town and would call again. She asked him for a cloth to put the meat in. Timms said he had not got one and would be obliged if she would lend him one. Timms returned in about ¼ hour and took away the meat and the cloth. After she had weighed it Timms said he had not brought the money and she was to put it on Mr Hawkins account. She gave a ticket with the meat – 8lbs at 8d a lb, making 5s 4d. Prudence Wheeler – she is the wife of Charles Wheeler of Millbrook, publican. On 8 May Timms came to their house and brought with him something in a cloth. He drank some beer. He asked some people including her if they would buy a bit of meat. She said she did not want any. Timms said he had bought a joint of meat from Miss Hallworth and did not think it would weigh so much, and when he had paid he did not have 1/2d left to buy a loaf. He said he did not have any money to pay for his beer. She bought 3lb 2oz for 1s 7½d and paid him money less the price of the pint of beer. She is sure it was Timms – she knew him before by sight. Geoffrey Hawkins – he is a farmer at Marston. He knows Timms who lives near to him. Timms does not work for him and he did not sent him to Hallworth for meat. He always sends for or buys the meat himself for his house. His wife does not. James Timms - he has nothing to say except that he did not fetch the meat from Mr Hallworth's and did not sell any at Wheeler's.
