  • Scope and Content
Prisoners in custody 29th June 1872 = 112. The committals during the Quarter have been 72 males and 8 females, total 80, being an decrease of 36 as compared with the corresponding quarter of last year. Of the 80 committals 40 were residents and 40 non residents of the County. 2 could read and write well, 35 imperfectly, 16 read only and 27 could do neither. 11 had been in this prison once before, 3 twice, 10 four times or more. On the 12th April Jesse Sharp and William Henry Crowsley under sentence of penal servitude, were removed to Pentonville Convict Depot by order of the Secretary of State. James Brown was removed ibn the 10th April to the Beds Reformatory. During the Quarter 20 Middlesex prisoners have been received an 6 discharged. One being found insane was removed to Colney Hatch Asylum and one received a remission of sentence on medical grounds and was given up to his friends 10th June last. On 19th April George Church committed from the Borough of Bedford was whipped (12 stripes) by order of the Committing Magistrates. Stephen Hulatt committed from the Borough of Bedford for one month was, shortly after his reception, discovered to have smallpox. Steps were taken at once to isolate him and a special nurse was provided. The case was considered of virulent character, but I am thankful to report that no further case occurred within the prison. Hulatt was sufficiently recovred to be removed to the smallpox Hospital in the town on the expiration f his term of imprisonment. Frederick Ireland who had been originally committed to prison for trial on 26th April 1871 was subsequently found to be insane and afterwards removed to Fisherton Asylum. On 31st may last he was brought back from Fisherton by order of the Secretary of State and was delivered into my custody, certified as 'of sound mind'. He shortly after became very violent, assaulting the officers, shouting, and yelling...under the direction of the Visiting Justices he was re-examined by the medical men and again pronounced to be insane...the prisoner has since been sent back to Fisherton Asylum. George henry Bandy, night watchman has resigned and Charles Cherry has been appointed in his stead. I recommend this appointment for confirmation. Warder [Henry] Pearson died 13 May last. Pearson had been an offier of the prison close upon 20 years. His conduct in the prison was satisfactory. On 26th April the Inspector of Prisons (H Briscoe) visited the prison and saw all the prisoners both male and female and found everything 'most satisfactory'.
