    Elizabeth Hooker: the prisoner had worked for her for some weeks. On 15 March she discharged her. In consequence of something which she heard she went upstairs to look for her veil on 18 March. S he found the veil gone. The veil had been in a box in her bedroom. She had seen the veil since the prisoner had worked for her and the prisoner had started working for her on the first Monday in January. On 19 March PC Cook showed her a veil which she knew to be hers. The veil was worth about half a crown. Joseph Sheppard: he lived at Market Street and the prisoner had been working for him. In consequence of information received from the prisoner’s sister, who had been in the house, that he should find a veil in the clothes basket. He went upstairs and took a shirt out of the clothes basket. He shook the shirt and a veil fell out. He took it downstairs and showed it to the prisoner’s sister who asked him to give her the veil. He said he should give it to PC Cook. He then sent for Cook and gave him the veil. PC Isaac Cook: on the night of 18 March he took the prisoner into custody at Market Street and charged her with stealing a veil. The prisoner said she did not have it and that she had burnt it. The next morning he was sent for by Mr Sheppard and he gave him the veil. Mary Ann Horwood: sister of the prisoner. On Friday morning she heard her mother ask the prisoner if she had burnt the veil or not. The prisoner had been taken into custody the night before. The prisoner relied she had not and had left it at Mr Sheppard’s in the clothes basket. She went to Mr Sheppard’s and told him he would find the veil in the clothes basket. Mr Sheppard went upstairs and came down with the veil. She asked him to give it to her but he said he would give it to PC Cook. It was a black veil. Statement of the accused: nothing to say.
