  • Scope and Content
Most of the prisoners have been quite well during their confinement - and many of them have left the prison when their sentence has expred in an improved state of health. The Middlesex prisoners of whom there are 59 in custody are, with one exception only, in very good health. Some few of them have suffered from illness during their imprisonment, but not of any very serious nature. All these prisoners but one have increased in weight during their imprisonment; and I am certain that thir general appearance has improved and that the discipline and regular work of the prison is very beneficial to them also. There have been four deaths in the prison during the year. John Bergin committed to prison on 11 November died ater a long illness on 23 January. Henry Young, committed suicide by hanging on 20 January; having been apparently in good health during his imprisonment. Thomas Kenney died of exhaustion on 24 April, 3 days only after his committal to prison. and William Eastaff died of epilepsy on 7th June - after an illness of only three days, having been in prison about two months. One of the Middlesex prisoners, William Donovan, received a free pardon in August, having suffered from a dangerous illness for five or six weeks. AT the present time there are two risoner s suffering from severe illness, and a few others from slight forms of indisposition.
