- Scope and ContentJohn Collins: the prisoner was in his employment for several months. The prisoner carried out the bread to customers and was in the habit of collecting ready money for it, as he charged the bread half penny cheaper on that account. There was a person by the name of White in Milton who did have bread on credit. About a month previous he turned the prisoner away as he found he had been cheating him. He subsequently discovered that he had received money from the customer, White, which the prisoner had not accounted for. There was 5s 3 ½ pence in his books for White making it appear the amount had not been paid. He had also entrusted the prisoner to the amount of bread to the value of £1 0s 2d which he refused to account for and refused to say where it had been delivered. The prisoner left on 25 July. £1 0 2 had been embezzled a fortnight previous to that day. This was why he turned the prisoner away. When the prisoner left he told him unless he accounted for the money he would have him locked up. The prisoner abused him and said he would go and see about it the next day. The following morning the prisoner said he had been to the persons who had the bread but they had no money and would pay on Wednesday. He refused to give the names of the people which had the bread. Eliza White: wife of the gamekeeper John White and resided at Milton Lodge. She had been in the habit of having bread from Mr Collins and sometimes had it on credit. A month ago she had paid John Goss, 7 shillings and 4 pence halfpenny which was the full amount she owed Mr Collins. The following Saturday the new man, employed by Mr Collins, told her there was money outstanding on her account. This was not the case. Statement of the accused: not guilty.
