    Thomas Pestel of Luton, ostler – on Thursday 12 November Stokes and Bandy were at the Red Lion in Luton where he is ostler, with a horse and cart. After they left he wanted his shovel and could not find it. On Friday 13th PC Millard brought a shovel which he identified as his by 4 notches cut in it which he made himself. The prisoners were both sober when they left the Red Lion. John Millard of Luton, police constable – he was with PC Maffey when he searched Stokes cart at the Crown and Anchor pubic house on 12 November. He saw a shovel in the cart. He later received information that a shovel ahd been stolen from the Red Lion Inn where they had put up their horse and cart. He went to Maldon on Friday 13th and went to Stokes’ father’s house and asked Stokes’ brother fort eh shovel which had come down in the cart. and was given the shovel now produced. He showed it to the ostler at the Red Lion who said he could swear to it.
