  • Scope and Content
George Peter Livius, Charles Gillies Payne, Rev. H Ward. [John] Barnes and [Josiah] Smith are the only two on Surgeons List and both convalescent. [Joseph] Holloman is removed to his home. One of the nurses was paid off last night. The female prisoner is reported to have behaved very outrageously, she has been confined on part of the day yesterday to her day room - and afterwards to the refractory until bed time - next morning she repeated her former conduct. The surgeon in consequence ordered her to be put in a strait jacket. She was very violent during the day since that time her conduct has been peaceable. The Governor informs me that John Chandler (on hearing that John Keep and James Axam were committed on the charge of the burglary at Wootton) said he knew all about it and would tell all about it as long as he did not say anything to injure himself. The Governor told him that he should communicate what he told him. John Chandler said he should be glad to have an opportunity of doing it. I therefore sent for him and in the presence of the Governor put down on paper what he wished to communicate after cautioning him and telling him that what he said would if necessary be made use of - and what he said must be of his own free choice.
