  • Scope and Content
Samuel Claydon of St Paul, Bedford, draper – he lives in the High Street and is a customer fo Favell Barrenger. He knows Walker who has been in the habit of bringing bread to his house from Mr Barrenger. He believes Walker was always paid the price of the bread on delivery. Last Monday week 4 May Walker brought 2 half quartern loaves to his house for which he paid 8½d. He gave Walker a shilling and was given change. Favell Barrenger of St Cuthbert, Bedford, baker – he has employed Walker for about 1 ½ years. It was Walker’s duty to take out bread and flour to his customers and to receive the money, which it was his duty to pay on the same evening or the following morning. On Tuesday morning 5 May Walker paid him 4 ¼ d for one loaf he had left with Mr Claydon on the previous day. It was Walker’s practice on settling with him to tell him the number of loaves he had left, with whom, and when, with the money he had received for them. On Tuesday 5th Walker repeated once or twice that he had only left one loaf at Mr Claydon’s on the previous day. Anna Elsome, wife of John Elsome of St Peter, Bedford, labourer – her husband is shepherd to Mr Higgins and is a customer of Mr Berrenger. She knows Walker has been in the habit of bringing bread to her husband’s house on his behalf. She generally paid him. She remembers Walker bringing ½ stone of flour and one half quartern loaf on 8 May. The price of the flour was 15d and of the bread 3 ¾d. She paid 18d and left 3 farthings owing until the next day when she paid. Yesterday, 12 May, Walker left 4 loaves with her for which she paid 15d. Favell Barrenger – on 9 May Walker settled with him for the bread and flour for which he had been paid the previous day. Walker said he had left ¼ stone of flour with Mrs Elsome and had been paid 7 ½d. Walker paid him 11s 3d that morning (itemised). On 13 May Walker paid him 7 ½d he had received the previous day from Mrs Elsome. For the past fortnight he has invariably settled with Walker on the same day or the following morning after he had delivered the bread
