Scope and Content
All letters from the Rev. Arthur E. Main to Humphrey Whitbread (his warden), except where otherwise noted. Occasional annotations by Whitbread. Most cover a variety of church and personal topics, including accounts, old and new vicarages, church fabric and fixtures, churchyard, liturgy, heating and electricity, parish officers, organist, choir, activities. Other matter includes:
-- comment on New & Lingwood’s centenary [Eton clothiers] and television programme thereon (in 29 June letter);
--‘refresher course’ at his old Theological College, St. Aiden’s Birkenhead (2 July);
--proposed grille over Sir William Gascoigne’s tomb, Mrs. Ferriman possibly to contribute by way of memorial to her late husband (29 June and 22 July);
-- letter from Archdeacon of Bedford, with notes attached from his talk with Alsop (Assistant Chaplain-in-Chief, RAF Bomber & Transport Command), in preceding February, regarding Mr. Main’s pastoral responsibility at RAF church (chapel) at Cardington for civilian personnel; division of pastoral oversight, with stats.; Hartley at RAF Cardington, and Harrison, chaplain at RAF Henlow (7 September);
-- miniature brasses, all sold and accounted for in the Service Register, and proposed further set, with note of Mr. Illesley’s advice that Sir Jarrete Hervey brass not suitable to reproduce (3 November and 1 December).
