Ann Maria Grace: a single woman employed by the prosecutor. She knew the prisoner by sight. On 25 March the prisoner came into the parlour at the Plume & Feathers and sat close to the recess where the cruet frame was. The prisoner was alone in the room for about a quarter of an hour. She saw the cruet frame with the 2 bottles and a vinegar bottle, all safe earlier that day. She missed the 2 bottles with silver tops the next morning and informed the prosecutor. The prisoner had been solver whilst in the room. PC Joseph Farley: on 4 April he went to the prisoner’s house and searched it. In a cupboard in a downstairs room he found the 2 bottles with silver tops. The prisoner’s wife said she knew nothing about them. He apprehended the prisoner. When told the charge the prisoner said he had not stolen the glasses and knew nothing about them. Inspector William Clough: on 4 April the prisoner was given into his custody. The prisoner said he had been at the Plume of Feathers and had been drunk. The prisoner said someone must have put the glasses in his pocket and he found them when he got home along with a piece of sponge. Statement of the accused: he had not stolen them and did not know how they had come to be in his pocket.
