  • Scope and Content
Philip Hunt, Thomas Barber. 53 prisoners. The chaplain had been ill of influenza. The Surgeon's Journal stated his opinion that [Henry] Riley who had refused to work, is probably affected with obscure disease of the sciatic nerve and he recommends his being allowed to be absent from the treadmill. An order was received from the Home Office Convict department to defer the departiure of Mary Anne Courade [Conreve] to the hulks in consequence of her advanced state of pregnancy. The Visiting Justices recommend an enquiry to be instituted at the next Quarter Sessions as to the extra diet from friends to prisoners before trial, and on charges of bastardy and for debt, who claim the prison allowance, as the practice now followed appears contrary to the spirit and the enactments of the Prison Regulation Acts of Parliament.
