Thomas Sinfield of Eaton Bray, police constable – on Wednesday 10 December between 7 and 9pm John Goodman was drunk and hollowing about the street in Eaton Bray. Goodman went into a beer shop. He met him coming out and Goodman began abusing him. He told Goodman to go home and be quiet. Goodman said he would see him damned first. He told Mrs Abraham the landlady not to draw Goodman any beer. When he came out Goodman kept abusing him. He told him several times to go home and be quiet. Goodman pulled a bludgeon out of his pocket and struck him on the head. He took Goodman into custody. He sent for James Sear to assist him. They put handcuffs on Goodman and got a horse and cart to take him to Luton Cage. When they had started Thorn said “I will be damned if he shall go now if any of you will help me” and laid hold of the horse’s head. He cautioned Thorn and charged him to aid and assist him. Joseph Goodman and Brown caught hold of the horse’s head and he charged them both to aid and assist him. They held the horse’s head while Goodman pulled his father out of the cart. Brown then led John Goodman home. He went and got the parish constables to assist him. He searched for them but could not find them. John Goodman still had the handcuffs on. James Sear of Eaton Bray – PC Sinfield came to his house and asked him to assist in taking John Goodman to Luton Cage. He helped put him in the cart. Sinfield led the horse into the road. There were several people there. Goodman held up his hands and cried out “look out”. [Rest of deposition as previous witness] John Millard of Luton, police constable – about 7am on Saturday Dec 13th he went to Eaton Bray to apprehend Thorn and two others on a warrant for rescuing John Goodman. He went to Thorn’s house and rapped at the door. Thorn admitted he expected him to come and take him to Luton. Thorn said to Sinfield “give us your hand old fellow” and shook hands with him. Thorn said “this is all through the old Doctor, I did not like to see him go”. They call John Goodman the old Doctor.
