Depositions and examination - James Denton

William Johnson the younger, surveyor – on Monday 1 September he was at Carlton feast. He was sitting in the Angel public house with James Denton beside him. After some time he missed a handkerchief from his pocket and suspected Denton had taken it. He mentioned the loss to Joseph Neal the policeman. He is sure he put it in his right hand pocket. He later went to Denton’s lodgings with the policeman. The policeman brought the handkerchief now produced which he identified as his. It is a cotton one, value 3d. Joseph Neal, policeman – he was on duty at Carlton feast and received information from Johnson that he had lost a handkerchief and suspected Denton. They went to Denton’s lodgings. He found Denton in bed and asked him if he had Johnson’s handkerchief. He said he had not and had no handkerchief at all in his possession. He searched Denton’s trousers and found the handkerchief in the pocket, which was buttoned up. Denton said someone must have put it there. Johnson identified the handkerchief as his property. James Denton of Carlton, labourer – he does not know how the handkerchief came into his possession. He never saw it until the policeman showed it to him.
