- Scope and ContentDetails given: -- The mansion house of the rectory with all buildings, orchards etc; -- Herbage and feeding of Burges close adjoining the house (16 acres); - Bene close (9 acres); - Hamonds close (15 acres); - Pond close (6 acres); - a little meadow at nether end of Burges close (6 acres); - Longe mead adjoining latter (12 acres); - Hale Meade adjoining latter (8 acres); - 2 meadows adjoining called Towne or Madelande meades (20 acres); - Flote Close (13 acres); - Wett close adjoining (10 acres); - Bushey close (14 acres); - Drye close (16 acres); - Kkine close (11 acres); - Revells close, Goldsmiths close and Parsonage close lying together (12 acres); - Jenyes pightell (1 acre); - Harlyes croft (4 acres); - Mertyns meades (10 acres); - close or meades lying together called Little Higham and Todgoose close (17 acres); - Moore or Wrest meade (10 acres), in the occupation of Right Honourable Henry, Earl of Kent. Trees, woods and bushes excepted and reserved to Sir Henry Butler, but sufficient to be left for necessary repairs. To the use for life of John Butler the elder and his wife Elizabeth and of the heirs male of his body. Elizabeth shall not plough any part of the pasture nor pay rent therefore, rent to be payable from the residue of the premises herein granted. Remainder to such issue of the body of Sir Henry Butler as he may appoint by will or writing. The residue to the use of Sir Henry Butler for life, then of his daughter Lucy until she has received therefrom the sum of £500. The residue to the use of John Butler for life, then to each of his younger sons and of his daughters in succession until each has received therefrom the sum of £500. The residue to the use of the heirs male of the body of the said John. Remainder to such issue of Sir Henry Butler as he may by will or other writing appoint. Recites: 12 October 1588, Lease (enrolled), 67 years: Sir John Butler, late father of Sir Henry Butler, to Sir Henry Butler. Manor of Higham Gobion and all other lands etc in Higham then in tenure of William Barber; from expiration of lease to latter dated 1 March 1553 [see BS 983]. 1 June 1569 [as recited in BS 991-992] 15 April 1570: confirmation of foregoing by Nicholas, Bishop of Lincoln, and Sir Henry Butler, then patron of the church of Higham Gobion [see BS 991-992]. Marriage settlement: marriage of John Butler the elder to Elizabeth, daughter of Sir George Villiers, knight (then George Villiers, esquire): Sir Henry Butler to divers persons and divers uses the manor and rectory of Higham Gobion; which settlement has now been determined with consent of George Villiers and John Butler.
