- Scope and ContentJohn Saville of Great Barford, butcher – Tedhanar Webb is his household servant. On Wednesday 18 June on going to bed he had 9 sovereigns in a purse in his trousers pockets. He did not put them on on Thursday morning and they were left in the room. On Friday morning he found that one sovereign had been taken from the purse. Only Webb and his wife had access to the room. His wife had not been to his purse. Mary Fisher of Great Barford, singlewoman – on Thursday morning 19 June about 10am Webb came to her and asked if she could give her change for a sovereign. She did not give her change. John Saville [further deposition] – his family consists of himself, his wife, 2 children (the oldest of whom is about 2 ½ years old) and Webb. Webb had been in his service between 5 and 6 months. He has never paid her a sovereign during that time. He generally paid her 2 or 3 shillings a time as she wanted it. Betsy Harpur wife of William Harpur of Great Barford, labourer – she knows Webb. On Thursday Webb came to her house about a dress she had to sell. Webb had previously spoken to her about it. She sold Webb the dress for 12s. Webb has a sovereign with her for which she got change. Charlotte Spring of Great Barford, singlewoman – she last saw Webb a fortnight last Thursday night. She met Webb in Great Barford street and walked down town with her. As they were passing Mrs Harpur’s house a woman was sitting in the house making a dress. Webb said it was her dress, and that she had given 12 shillings for it, and that her mistress had given her a sovereign. She thinks it was a fortnight ago – it was either a week or a fortnight. Tedhanar Webb – nothing to say.
