- Admin/biog historyThe Bedfordshire Archaeological and Architectural Society formed on the 28th September 1847. In its first annual report the foundations of the society were given as it having occurred to a gentleman present at the annual meeting of the Bedfordshire Library that 'a society might be established for the publication of some of the best illustrations of church archtiecture in this county; and after some preliminary deliberartion, a meeting of gentlemen favourable to such a desigh took place on the 28th day of September 1847- "For the purpose of taking into consideration the propriety of forming a society, having for its objects the collection of archaeological and architectural information in this county, &c". On the first records of the society the name is given as Bedfordshire Archaeological and Architectural Society but on its first and subsequent printed reports the name is give as the Bedfordshire Architectural and Archaeological Society. No trace has been found of a formal change from one to the other and it is assumed they were used somewhat interchangeably to begin with. The Bedfordshire Natural History Society and Field Club held its preliminary meeting on the 16 April 1875 and was formed for the promotion of the Science of Natural History using the term in its widest sense. The Bedfordshire Architectural and Archaeological Society amalgamated with the Bedfordshire Natural History Society to form the Bedfordshire Archaeological and Natural History Society. The amalgamated society held its first meeting on the 12 January 1888. In 1890 the Bedfordshire Archaeological and Natural History Society was absorbed by the Bedford Literary and Scientific Institute and General Library.
