- Scope and ContentJoseph Steele: lived at Bircott in the parish of Wing, Buckinghamshire. On the Wednesday he had the note in his breeches pocket and he missed it on Saturday 18 November. His son, the prisoner, had been away from home for a year and a half and returned on 16 November. The other prisoner came with him and they both slept at the house. They all 3 slept together and he left his breeches by his side. The prisoners left together on the morning of 17 November. He had received the note from selling a horse a month earlier. His son knew he had sold the horse but not that he had the note. He had since been told the note was a bad one. Richard Harris: a leather cutter of Leighton. On 17 November the prisoner came to his shop together. Steel bought a pair of shoes and tendered the note. He suspected the note was bad and gave it to his man to get it changed at the bankers. Mr Bassett the banker informed him it was a bad note. The prisoners remained in the shop. They knew he had sent to the bank and remained quiet until the man returned. Steele said he had the note from Mr Bennett of Wing when he was interrogated by Mr Bassett. Steel afterward told him he had it from his father. PC Worsley came and took the prisoners into custody. Both had looked at shoes together and Smith had made a remarked about the price of shoes. PC Thomas Worsley: he took the 2 prisoners into custody. Steele said his father had given him the note over night. When they were at the Woburn lock up Steele said he had taken it from his fathers pocket that morning. The prisoner Smith said he knew nothing of it. Statement of the accused: nothing to say.
