Scope and Content
Travelled from Woburn to Northampton, & then to Sheffield (cost 17s. for himself & 6.6d. for excess weight of box). Called immediately at Mr. R. How's [Richard, son of Briggins How] but he was not yet risen because his face was swelled in some manner - suffocating smoke - Mr. Sauer has offered 40 guineas the first year & £50 the 2nd - Expecting to go to Spain & Italy. Trouble with lodgings: price for a room 13s. per week (or 11s. if one's own tsa? & sugar) considered high. – “Tse?" [in German characters] is the Yorkshire dialect, & they use often the word Nay. Adds a note in shorthand for young Master How.
